W Bro Rod Humphrey, with his dog Bramble at his side, is walking the equivalent of Land’s End to John O’Groats (874 miles) to raise £10,000 for the Motor Neuron Disease Association to support people like his friend and Masonic Brother Andy Sheppard. Rod and Andy met through the Lodge of Union 38 in Chichester.
Andy, who is married to Jodie and has three young children (15, 13 and 8), has Motor Neuron Disease (MND). This is a debilitating, fast-progressing and incurable disorder of the motor neurones. Sufferers, like Andy, quickly struggle to manage everyday tasks, such as walking, dressing, eating and talking. Rod has been deeply affected by and feel helpless watching the impact of MND on Andy and his family.
Rod loves walking in the countryside with his dog, Bramble, and his wife Lesley. They had thought of actually walking from Land’s End to John O’Groats, but Covid19 scuppered that idea. Then inspiration struck – perhaps Rod could walk the length of the country and raise money to help people like Andy. The ‘874 Miles in Andy’s Shoes’ campaign was born!
Having signed up with the on-line company ‘EndtoEnd’, Rod and Bramble started this virtual walk on 23rd November 2020. They’ll be walking until July 2021. The ‘EndtoEnd’ (LEJOG8) system charts their progress. Because of Covid19 restrictions Rod and Bramble are currently walking in the South Downs area around Lavant. Rod hopes to be in Scotland in July walking the last few miles with his wife and a couple of friends.
It’s a big personal challenge for Rod (73), he’ll need to walk at least 30 miles every week.
There is currently no treatment or cure for MND. Rod hopes that £10,000 would help fund research to make a real difference for Andy and others with this dreadful disease.
