We held our first Family Fun Day & BBQ at Westbourne House School in Chichester, West Sussex on Saturday 27th August 2022.
Westbourne House offers a beautiful parkland setting and the weather was lovely on the day and not too hot as had been experienced in the weeks prior.
Our MND stands comprised of an awareness table with information and volunteers available to chat. We had been donated a 4’ Andrex puppy from Tesco that was looking for it’s new forever home and we ran a ‘Name the Andrex Puppy’ stand with a representative from Tesco coming along to draw the name. ‘Flash’ was very happy at the end of the day to go home with his new family and I’m sure he’ll be loved and looked after.
Our tombola had received some fantastic prizes, donated by local companies and volunteers. There was a superb hamper and lots of ‘smellies’ as well as bottles of wine, gifts and chocolates.
We had over 10 classic cars and some military vehicles, including a Ferret armoured car, all of which drew a lot of interest. A Model T Ford had been driven from Patcham in Brighton by his enthusiastic owner and he was more than happy to offer rides throughout the afternoon, raising over £100 in donations. Chichester Fire Station came along as well as 2 vintage fire engines which showed just how much the vehicles have changed over the years.
We had so much to offer, including artisan stall holders offering a range of home-made items from Teddy’s, sand art and aromatherapy soaps and shampoos.
There was plenty for the children to do with traditional games such as ‘Splat the Rat’ and Skittles to test your skill at bowling. A beat the buzzer game needed a steady hand and a hoopla game showed off accuracy of aim.
We had a bouncy castle, bungee trampoline, ice cream van and a great coffee van supplying lots of goodies as well as hot drinks on the day. Also on hand was a lovely lady called Claire who had supplied the food for the BBQ and not only that, but she also cooked it all too!! A well stocked bar provided beer, wine and soft drinks.
Barbara, our Chair had organised a Dog Show with several categories including Best Behaved Puppy, Best Junior Handler, Handsomest Dog, Prettiest Bitch, Golden Oldie, Waggiest Tail, Dog most like Owner and Best in Show. The dogs were all well behaved and there was a lot of happy ‘tail wagging’ when the winners left with their rosettes.
A local choir called Singers Rechoired, came along to sing a medley of well-known tunes that had everybody foot tapping and joining in. They had performed a summer concert at a local church for MNDA West Sussex branch and wanted to support our fun day too.
It was a fantastic day and all our volunteers worked so hard to get everything ready and in place for the 12 o’clock start. In all we raised over £2,200 which was fantastic.
