The Albon Family held a Charity Ball for the MNDA WSS Branch in memory of John Albon and those lost to and living with MND

On Friday 1st September, Olivia Albon and the rest of the Albon Family hosted the Sussex MND Association Charity Ball.

The evening was an enormous triumph and raised nearly £11,000! We are amazed by the astounding amount that was raised.

Olivia has spent time organising this grand event in memory of her Grandad who passed away in September 2020 after his diagnosis in July 2018. Her Mum, Cathy Albon, is now an Association Visitor (AV) and her Nan, Barbara Albon, is now our Chairwoman, both with the West Sussex South Branch of the MNDA.

There was lots going on throughout the evening, Frankie Cary (John’s granddaughter/Olivia’s sister) hosted the evening; there was a wonderful magician, Martin Sanderson, who shocked many people with his incredible magic tricks; Andrew Mardell was their excellent photographer who took some beautiful photos of the guests and the gorgeous venue at Worthing Golf Club; an auction (hosted by Chris Albon (John’s Son) and Paul Merridue) and raffle with so many items donated by various people/companies/sportspeople; a speech about the MNDA Charity and the role of an AV by Cathy Albon; a DJ and our LIVE Ice Bucket Challenge.

Many people don’t know or realise that the Ice Bucket Challenge that went viral on Facebook in 2014 was linked to ALS, which is what MND is called in the USA. The Ice Bucket Challenge was co-founded by Peter Frates & Pat Quinn – Peter Frates had been diagnosed with MND and wanted to raise money for the associated charities. Cathy Albon (John’s daughter), had the idea to host a LIVE Ice Bucket Challenge during the evening and we can’t believe how many people volunteered themselves. 3 out of the 10+ volunteers got ice bucketed, everyone had to vote (as many times as they liked) for who they wanted to see ice bucketed!!

The family would like to thank everyone who attended and so kindly showed their support and to those who donated to the auction and raffle prizes. They hope to see you at the next Charity Ball in 2025!

Thank you Albon Family! 💙🧡
